In their research, they found that the cost for a particular dose of iron may vary a hundred-fold or even more. Depending on the brand, it can cost as cheap as $.02 to over $2.
ConsumerLab.com’s president Tod Cooperman, MD noted that unlike in their previous survey done in 2008, all the brands included in this current one are of high quality. He suggested, however, that consumers investigate further if they are actually taking the right dose and the right form. More importantly, they must ensure that they are not paying “more money than necessary.”
For the costing, ConsumerLab.com compared the brands by calculating the cost of 25mg of iron from each sample. Among the brands included in the study are 21st Century Beta Iron, Fergon, Life Extension Iron Plus, Garden of Life Raw Iron, and Slow Fe. Most of the more expensive brands included iron complexes with polypeptides (protein), polysaccharides (sugars), heme, a mixture of iron forms, or other additional ingredients.
