Chewing, or mastication, is an essential part of the digestive process. The two more powerful muscles of the mandible involve the temporalis and the masseter muscles, each of which are made increasingly powerful by their cohesive efforts with the pterygoid muscle. Movements such as teeth grinding are controlled by the medial and lateral pyterygoid muscles. Protraction of the mandible is controlled via the lateral pterygoid muscle.
