Staphylococcus aureus has another medication to worry about - Clindamycinum. This antibiotic is one of the most effective without having to worry about hypersensitivity reactions. Though patients do have to learn proper use and observance of adverse effects.
Clindamycinum is the generic name for the lincosamide antibiotic. It is used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and some protozoal illnesses like malaria. Since it is highly effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA infections, Clindamycinum is used to treat acne. The medication is available under the brand names Dalacin, Cleocin, Duac and Evoclin.
Clindamycinum can be used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, pelvis, abdomen and vagina, peritonitis and septicemia. The medication works well for patients with known hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins. Bone and joint infections from Staphylococcus aureus can also be treated with this medication. The medication is available in capsule form, taken orally. There are also lotions and gels that are applied topically for skin infections.
Serious side effects and allergic reactions include face and lip swelling, breathing difficulty, hives and rash, bloody or watery stool, fever, flu-like symptoms, body aches, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice, scanty or absent urine and cephalalgia. Mild to moderate side effects include mild nausea, stomachache, vaginal pruritus or discharge, throat irritation and mild skin pruritus or rash. Patients should immediately stop taking the medication if they experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction. For mild to moderate side effects, patients may continue consumption but everything should be reported to the physician.
Patients with hypersensitivity to Clindamycinum or lincomycin should not take this medication. This medication is also known to cause adverse reactions if it is taken with erythromycin. Patients with a history of Crohns disease, asthma, eczema, allergies, colitis, intestinal disorder, kidney problem or liver disease should first consult their physician to ensure safety. Clindamycinum is thought to have effects in-vitro so pregnant women, those trying to become pregnant and nursing mothers should seek their physician's advice before taking this medication.
Clindamycinum has a bacteriostatic effect where bacterial protein synthesis is interfered with through its binding action to bacterial ribosome particularly the 50S subunit. Since the medication binds to the subunit, bacterial growth and spread is inhibited. Clindamycinum is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after which it is delivered to various infection sites in the body.
In a study, 20 patients suffering from Staphylococcus aureus skin infections were treated with 500 mg of Clindamycinum every 6 hours for 2 weeks. After the first week, 14 participants exhibited a lot of improvement and by the end of the second week, 19 participants had improved conditions and 8 of the participants were fully recovered. Only 3 of the participants showed mild allergic side effects such as skin pruritus and rash.
Clindamycinum is an over-the-counter or OTC medication, which can be bought at any pharmacy or drug store. The tablets are available in 250 or 500 mg. Consumers should check the expiration date, manufacturer and brand name to ensure authenticity. When buying generic brands, it is important to only look for certified drug stores and online sites.
Clindamycinum overdose is also possible so patients should watch for signs and seek medical attention as soon as they notice any symptoms. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as remembered but skip the missed dose if it is almost time to take the next one. Store the medication at room temperature free from direct sunlight and moisture. Follow the instructions given by the physician, especially if the medication is intended for vaginal use.
