Hypertension is a debilitating disease. It is sometimes asymptomatic yet it clearly poses a great threat in one’s life. If not diagnosed early or if not interfered with an effective drug therapy, hypertension can be disabling and worse, fatal.
Telmisartan is a drug used as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with others to control high blood pressure. It is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, which works by blocking the activity of certain chemicals that tighten up the blood vessels. As a result, blood flows more easily.
Aside from hypertension, Telmisartan is also sometimes prescribed to patients with congestive heart failure.
The use of Telmisartan must start with a doctor’s advice. Submit yourself for consultation and discuss every factor that may get in the way of your medication treatment. Tell your doctor about your allergies, your medical history, and your current drug intake, which may react with Telmisartan.
Telmisartan must be used carefully with patients who have heart ailments, kidney problems, and liver disorders. They are usually given a dosage adjustment or a different drug when necessary.
Telmisartan is also not recommended to be used in pregnant and lactating women. The drug may pass on to the offspring and cause harm.
Telmisartan comes in tablet form. It can be taken with an empty stomach or with food. For some patients, one dose each day is enough to control hypertension. For others, taking the drug twice daily may be necessary. Your doctor should only be the one to adjust your dosage at any given point in your treatment. Do not take less or more of the drug unless it was directly your doctor’s instructions. Hypertension sometimes occur without symptoms so it is important that you Telmisartan continuously, even if you feel perfectly fine.
Take Telmisartan at about the same time each day to avoid forgetting your dose. If you miss out on a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is two hours away from your next dose. If it is too close, you better discard your missed dose and take your medicine as usual to avoid overdose. Any signs of overdose – fainting, dizziness, and palpitation – must rush you to your doctor immediately.
Like other medication, Telmisartan pose some side effects that are caused by your body’s inhibitions towards the drug. Common and less serious side effects such as sore throat, runny nose, back pain, and diarrhea must disappear after a short period of time. If they persist, worsen, or came with less common but serious symptoms such as hoarseness, breathing difficulty, and fainting, you should see your doctor the soonest possible time.
Keep a close contact with your doctor while you are under Telmisartan treatment. Regular check-ups will help monitor your progress with the drug including the health risks that may appear at anytime during your medication therapy. Telmisartan is only advisable for use when it provides more advantage than otherwise. If your symptoms of side effects overpower the benefits of the drug, you must tell your doctor.
