Asthma is a difficult condition. Breathing disturbances can create a lot of discomfort. Since Asthma is chronic and can be a lifelong condition, a potent medicine that can battle all the constrictions in breathing is needed. Vanceril is one drug that can prevent a severe Asthma attack.
Vanceril is a corticosteroid that is often used in asthmatic patients who do not respond well enough to conventional therapy. It is also prescribed to those who have become dependent to corticosteroids. Vanceril provides relief to breathing difficulties caused by Asthma attacks. It is prescribed differently according to the patient’s condition and responsive ability to treatment. The maximum dosage of Vanceril is 20 puffs a day, which is instituted to prevent severe attacks. It cannot be used to treat a current attack.
One of the greatest concerns among Vanceril users is the rise of infection that may be acquired through the inhalation process. Patients, especially children, must take precautions regarding the administration of the drug. 20% of inhaled Vanceril penetrates the respiratory tract and can cause yeast infection. Patients under Vanceril treatment must therefore be looked closely for any signs of such a condition.
As a preventive measure, patients are advised to rinse their mouth with clean water after inhaling Vanceril. This can control incidence of yeast infection and the like. However, the water used for rinsing must not be swallowed.
Vanceril should not be used for children under the age of six. It is also contraindicated to patients who have tuberculosis and those with any form of infections – viral, fungal, and bacterial.
A medical professional must carefully direct the use of Vanceril. Abuse of Vanceril inhalation may cause cardiovascular problems. It is important that Vanceril is used properly as prescribed.
Patients who have been under high dosages of corticosteroids may experience withdrawal symptoms upon transfer to Vanceril. The doctor, therefore, has to know the patient’s medical history including the previous medications that the patient has taken as they may have a certain effect in Vanceril use.
The effects of Vanceril on pregnant and lactating women and their offspring have not been established. Yet it is advisable that pregnancy and lactation be taken up with the doctor to ensure that fetal harm or adverse effect on a nursing child would not be possible.
Vanceril may be prescribed for a long-term therapy. Patients undergoing long-term therapy of Vanceril must have themselves checked regularly to assess their response to the drug and the possible adverse effect of it on their pituitary-adrenal function. Blood testing must also be done regularly.
Vanceril has not been found to cause serious side effects if it is used as regulated, which is a maximum of 1mg a day. However, patients undergoing treatment must also be observed carefully to ensure that they are safe with the drug. The greatest cause for alarm is a sign of infection, which may be severe in some cases. It is advised that hoarseness and dry mouth be reported to the doctor immediately. In rare cases, Vanceril has also been reported to cause glaucoma.
