Eskalith is a medicine used in treating patients with manic episodes which is identified to be a state of a person’s behavioral changes from a depression state to an extreme excitement. This drug has a generic name of Lithium Carbonate. Manic episode is identified with symptoms like aggressiveness, urgent talking and difficulty in sleeping. Eskalith can also be prescribed for patients with excessive sexual urge, premenstrual tension and eating disorder.

When taking Eskalith for medication, it is recommended to eat your meals first so as to prevent experiencing upset stomach. When taking the medicine, avoid chewing or breaking it into pieces. The common dosage for adults who have acute episodes is about 1,000mg everyday. For immediate release forms would require at least 3 to 4 doses in a day while for long acting forms can be two times per day.

Doctors will decide on your dosage based on the level of Eskalith in your blood. Blood level checking is usually done two times per week after the first intake up to its regular cycle until medication is finished.

Elderly patients are usually administered with less dosage of Eskalith because they are no longer tolerant unlike the younger age.

Administering Eskalith requires some precautions in order to prevent any harmful effects to patients. When under medication with this drug, it is recommended to drink plenty of water, preferably more than 10 glasses a day. This is to ensure that you will not suffer from dehydration since this drug will make you sweat more than what is normal.

It is also important to maintain the dosage as prescribed by your physician because if you take insufficient dosage, there would be no benefit in terms of the effectiveness of the medicine. But if you have too much of Eskalith, your health would be in danger because of lithium poisoning.

Also avoid doing tasks which can put you into great danger such as driving, swimming, climbing or other similar activities because Eskalith may disrupt your coordination and judgment.

For women who are breast feeding or pregnant, it is not recommended to take up Eskalith. But in the case the parent needs such medicine; the doctor will most likely suggest stopping breast feeding the baby while on medication.

The most common side effect of Eskalith is lithium poisoning. However this can only result without proper consultation with a qualified medical practitioner. Lithium poisoning can easily be distinguished due to symptoms such as weakness, uncontrolled shaking of the hands, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness. If you notice any of the following side effects, contact your doctor immediately so as to avoid any serious problem.
