Beclomethasone dipropionate, known also as Beclomethasone, is a glucocorticoid steroid drug used in the treatment of a number of different irritations in the body. As an inhaler, it is used to alleviate asthma symptoms. Since it works directly on the lungs, it has fewer side effects than other steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is also widely used as a nasal spray used to treat symptoms of rhinitis and sinusitis. Beclomethasone nasal spray can be used for treating nasal polyps – either to prevent their recurrence after being surgically removed or to prevent theme from growing larger. This spray has also been used in some cases by doctors to treat sever cases of persistent canker sores.
An ointment preparation is also available for treating certain severe inflammatory disorders on the skin, especially in cases that do not respond to other less potent topical steroids. It has also been used to treat ulcerative colitis along with other drugs as a controlled-release tablet in the United Kingdom
Doctors usually prescribe this to sufferers of both seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is also used by asthma patients for prevention of asthma attacks. It is important to note that the drug is used as a preventive measure and will not work as effectively to stop ongoing asthma attacks. It is also not usually prescribed to cases where other existing non-steroidal drugs already work.
Dosage for the Beclomethasone inhaler varies a lot and depends on the severity of asthma symptoms and the doctor’s instructions. Beclomethasone may also be used in conjunction with other anti-asthma medication. Being a preventive drug, continue to use the inhaler even as conditions improve unless specifically ordered by your physician.
Unless you are using a QVAR inhaler, shake the inhaler first prior to using. Exhale as much air out of your lungs. Now, application can be done either by open mouth or closed mouth inhalation. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece while pressing down to spray the Beclomethasone medication. As you inhale, make sure the medicated mist goes down to your lungs and does not stray onto your mouth or throat. Care should also be taken that the mist does not escape through the nose. After holding your breath for about 5 to 10 seconds then exhale slowly. If a second shot of the inhaler is required, wait for 2 minutes before repeating the steps above.
The recommended dose for the nasal spray is around 2 sprays to each nostril twice a day, and not more than 12 applications per day for adults and 8 applications a day for children. However, always follow any specific instructions given by your doctor.
Clear your nasal passages before using the nasal spray. Put the nozzle of the nasal spray in one of your nostrils and inhale deeply as you squeeze the bottle – taking care to close the other nostril as you do this. Repeat this for the other nostril.
Beclomethasone may cause minor side effects such as irritation or drying of the mouth and throat, coughing, or difficulty speaking. Consult with your doctor if these become quite bothersome or persist for a long time.
However, some side effects may require immediate medical attention. These may include skin rashes, difficulty in breathing, swelling in the face and lower extremities, extended cold or other similar infections and muscle weakness.
Beclomethasone should not be used during active infections of the mucus lining in the nose as its effects may be reduced. Report to your physician if the spit coughed up in an asthma attack becomes thicker or experiences a change from a clear white discharge to yellow, green, or gray secretions.
Clean inhaler mouth pieces regularly in warm water and remember to re-prime nasal spray bottles by pumping it twice when not used after an extended period of time.
