Clorpropamide helps control high blood sugar and prevents kidney problems, heart disease, blindness, impotency and stroke. It works by stimulating the release of insulin in the patients body, lowering the level of blood sugar.

Clorpropamide is distributed under the brand names Orinase, Diabinese, and Tolinase and under several generic names including Acetohexamide, Tolbutamide and Tolazamide. This medicament is for patients with type II diabetes.

Clorpropamide is taken orally once a day or as prescribed by your physician. The dosage will vary depending on the condition being treated and the response of the patient to the medicament. Take the medicine at the same time daily for best results. Do not take more medicament than prescribed to avoid overdose.

Side effects include diarrhea, weight gain, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. These are minor side effects but still need to be reported to your physician if you experience any of these.

Serious side effects include unusual fatigue, irregular heartbeat, mood changes, weakness of the muscles, dark color stool, swelling of feet or hands, muscle weakness, vomiting, yellowish skin and eyes and stomach pains. The patient should be taken to a hospital immediately if any of these side effects occur.

Clorpropamide may cause hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. This is usually experienced by patients who do not consume enough calories. It is advisable to always carry glucose pills to raise the blood sugar if necessary. You may use substitutes like orange juice, candy, honey and sugar. It is essential to closely monitor your blood sugar when you are using Clorpropamide.

Before taking Clorpropamide, inform your physician if you have any allergies to this or similar medicaments. Also make sure your physician knows if you have other medical conditions including kidney problems, heart problems, thyroid problems, liver problem, poor diet or mineral imbalance.

The medicament affects your vision and causes drowsiness so it is advised not to engage in activities that include operating machines, driving and other extreme activities.

Patients taking this medicament should not consume alcoholic beverages because it increases the risk of having hypoglycemia. Alcohol negatively interacts with the medicament and can cause discomfort and unwanted side effects including stomach pain, nausea, facial flushing and dizziness.

While taking Clorpropamide, avoid extended exposure to sunlight because the medicament causes the body to be more sensitive with the sun. Patients should wear protective clothing when going outdoors.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers need to consult their physician before taking the medicine to avoid risk to the baby.
