Diovan

Diovan review by Medicalook.com

Diovan is often used in the treatment of hypertension and is also commonly used in patient treatment following a heart attack as a preventative measure against a second heart attack. Diovan is generically prescribed as valsartan and is part of the family of medications known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. These medications help the blood vessels to relax and prevent blood vessel restriction, which allows the blood to flow through the body with greater ease.

Not all patients will be able to tolerate Diovan and those who can not urinate or have experienced a previous allergy to sulfa medications can not take Diovan. Patients with a medical history which includes kidney disease or liver disease might need careful monitoring while taking this medication or may not be able to take it al all, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.

Diovan was rated a category D pregnancy risk by the American Food and Drug Administration, which means that this medication has been proven to cause birth defects or serious harm to a developing fetus. It has not yet been determined whether or not Diovan passes through the mother’s breast milk and causes harm to a nursing infant. Patients who are pregnant, nursing, or are likely to become pregnant should not take Diovan. Patients should use effective birth control while undergoing drug therapy with Diovan, and women should cease the medication and consult a physician at once should they become pregnant.

Diovan should only be taken as prescribed and patient alterations to the dosage should be avoided. In the event that the patient forgets or misses a dose, the dose can be taken when remembered, unless it is almost time for the next regular dose. Patients who can not safely take the missed dose should skip the missed dose and resume normal dosing with the following dose. Taking too much medication can lead to an overdose of Diovan. An overdose of Diovan requires medical attention urgently and should not be ignored. A patient who has overdosed is likely to experience symptoms such as lightheadedness, fainting, and heart problems such as a decrease in heart rate.

There is a risk of side effects associated with the use of Diovan. Some patients may experience side effects which are serious in nature and require immediate emergency medical attention. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, swelling, edema, rapid weight gain, fainting, feeling lightheaded, difficulty urinating or the inability to urinate, accelerated heart rate, pounding heart, jaundice, confusion, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, restlessness, excessive thirst, drowsiness, and increase in urination, muscle pain, weakness, seizures, or convulsions.

Typically most patients experience side effects that are less severe. Less serious side effects generally do not require medical attention but may need to be reported to the prescribing physician if they are bothersome. Side effects such as joint pain, muscle pain, headaches, dizziness, gas, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, sore throat, cough, dry mouth, mild congestion, and stuffy nose are quite common.

Other medications may interact and cause health complications of taken with Diovan. Some medications may make Diovan less effective. Diovan may also make other medications less effective. Medications with known interactions with Diovan include diuretics and additional blood pressure medications. Patients should always consult with the prescribing physician or health care professional before taking any new medications, including over the counter drugs and herbal supplements. Patients should not drink alcoholic beverages while taking Diovan.

Horrible piercing pain from neck to end of spine, hips. Could not walk more than 1 block. Could not stand for more than 5 minutes. Needed wheel chair to go to concert. Terrible wt gain. The worst 6 months of my life. The day I discontinured taking Diovan the pain in my spine was 50% less. I am still suffering with after effects of this horrible drug
