  Dutasteride

Dutasteride

Dutasteride review by Medicalook.com

Developed by GlaxoSmithKline, Dutasteride is a new drug designed for treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate is enlarged. Currently, Dutasteride has been gaining popularity for its ability to treat hair loss.

Dutasteride is marketed under the name, Avodart.

Common to middle-aged and elderly men, BPH occurs when there is an increase in the hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). As the amount of DHT increases, so does the size of the prostate.

Dutasteride can help decrease the size of the prostate by reducing the amount of dihydrotestosterone in the body. Scientifically, this effect classifies Dutasteride as a dual 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.

Since BPH and the symptom of an enlarged prostate is a condition that develops over time, bringing the prostate back to its normal size will also take time. As such, patients usually take Dutasteride for six months and up to two years. By the sixth month, you should already be able to detect some improvements in the prostate. By the second year, Dutasteride will have effectively prevented the blockage of urine flow or acute urinary retention, a condition that usually develops as a result of BPH.

Treatment with Dutasteride will significantly reduce the need for any BPH-related operation. Moreover, the Food and Drug Administration duly approved the therapeutic effects of Dutasteride.

However, recent studies seem to conclude that apart from treating BPH, Dutasteride can also alleviate hair loss due to male pattern baldness (MPB). With age, body tends to break down more testosterone, turning it into dehydrotestosterone (DHT). This DHT is thought to contribute to thinning of hair and eventual hair loss. According to researchers, Dutasteride can suppress the creation and subsequent effects of DHT. However, this effect has yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States.

Dutasteride is available in 0.5mg soft-gel capsules. Usually, these capsules are taken orally, with one capsule taken every day. The patient may take Dutasteride with or without food intake.

Generally, all men suffering with BPH may consider taking Dutasteride. However, although this drug is for men, there must still be appropriate warning for women who may administer the Dutasteride treatment. This drug is potent and is absorbed through the skin. As such, pregnant women must avoid handling it since its absorption may be harmful to the fetus.

Men taking Dutasteride may experience side effects. Usually, the side effects deal with the sexual functions of the male. More specifically, the drug may decrease the man’s libido, affect his ejaculation, and may even lead to impotence. Some men also experience tenderness in their breast or chest area. It is also common for patients taking Dutasteride to experience shedding of the skin. This shedding usually occurs for around six to eight weeks.

Since the patient may have to take then drug for an extended period of time, some of these side effects may persist on a long-term basis.

Because the effects may be long term and will greatly affect the patient’s sexual life, many of them opt out of the treatment.
