Nefazodone review

Nefazodone is used for treating depression. It works by managing the imbalance of the amount of neurotransmitters which is causing depression. Though this drug is used for treatment of depression, caution should be observed because some patients may still have a suicidal tendency due to depression even when under medication.

Nefazodone is prescribed to treat people suffering from depression. This is an antidepressant drug being distributed under the brand name Serzone.

Nefazodone can be taken orally with a glass full of water. You can take two doses everyday or as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may increase your dosage gradually in order to get the best results.

Do not attempt to increase or decrease your dosage without your doctor’s approval. Continue using the medicine even if you feel well.

If you missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember.

It is common for most drugs to cause some side effects when used. The most common side effects caused by using Nefazodone include dizziness, agitation, insomnia, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, tiredness, blurred vision, confusion, lightheadedness.

Nefazodone may also cause serious but rare side effects. Some of the serious side effects include irregular heartbeat, severe mental change, vomiting, skin rash, and seizure.

Male patients may even experience prolonged penile erection lasting for four hours. Such occurrence may cause permanent damage to the male organ. If you notice or experience any of the side effects, consult your doctor as soon as possible to avoid any serious complications.

Prior to medication, you must inform your doctor if you have any health problem such as heart disease, allergies, liver problem, and history of seizures. Provide the lists of medicines you are using including prescribed and non-prescribed drugs, vitamins, and herbal products to your doctor. This will help your doctor to evaluate if you are using drugs that may interact and interfere with the medication.

Avoid intake of alcohol while under medication. It is also best to avoid doing activities that requires alertness when using the drug because it may affect your normal alertness and can cause injuries or accidents.

You must keep all your medical appointments and laboratory tests so that your doctor can easily monitor the progress of your medication and determine if there are any side effects.

There are no efficient evidence that Nefazodone may cause risks to pregnant women and the unborn child. There are also no studies to prove that the drug is secreted in breast milk. However, it would be best to consult first your doctor before using the drug if you are a nursing mother or pregnant.

Antidepressants such as Nefazodone should not be taken together with any of the Mono-amine Oxidase or MAO such as phenelzine, isocarvoxazid, tranylcypromine, and procarbazine. This is to avoid the occurrence of high blood pressure, confusion, and tremor.

This type of drug should never be shared to anyone even with the same medical condition. Using this drug without consulting a doctor may lead to serious medical condition.
