Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which is generically prescribed as ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromate, is commonly used to prevent pregnancy. This medication prevents the body from ovulating and alters the mucous membranes of the cervix as well as alters the uterine wall lining. Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV. Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is applied as a patch rather than taken as a pill.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a history of recent pregnancy, stroke, blood clot, circulation problems, angina, high blood pressure, hormone dependent cancer, diabetes, abnormal vaginal bleeding, liver disease, liver cancer, migraines, heart valve disorders, or jaundice caused by birth control pills can not take Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Patients with a medical history which includes heart disease, heart attack, mild angina, heart failure, depression, kidney disease, high cholesterol, overweight issues, gallbladder disease, diabetes, seizures, epilepsy, or fibrocystic breast disease may not be able to take Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated this medication as a pregnancy risk category X, which means that it is highly probable that this medication will cause harm or birth defects to an unborn baby. This medication is known to pass into the mother’s breast milk as well as slow breast milk production, and affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should not prescribe this medication to women who are nursing, pregnant, are likely to become pregnant, or were recently pregnant.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical intervention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms that include facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects include symptoms such as sudden numbness or weakness that dominates one side of the body, chest pain or heaviness that involves the arm, sudden headache with pain behind the eyes, blurry vision, difficulty with speech, loss of balance or coordination, changes in the pattern or severity of migraines, nausea, stomach pain, dark urine, clay colored stools, jaundice, loss of appetite, swelling of the hands, ankles, and feet, breast lump, or depression.
Less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical treatment but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as bloating, mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, breast pain, swelling, or tenderness, freckles or darkening of the facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, problems with contact lenses, weigh gain, weight loss, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in menstrual period, sexual dysfunction, headaches nervousness, dizziness, and fatigue.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo should be used exactly as it has been prescribed. Additional patches should not be used to make up for forgetting to place a patch on the skin. The patient should not allow more than seven days to pass before applying a new patch. If an overdose of this medication is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose would present with symptoms which include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.
There is a risk of negative drug interactions associated with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications with known interactions with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo include acetaminophen, ascorbic acid, prednisone, phenylbutazone, theophylline, cyclosporine, St. John’s Wort, antibiotics, seizures medications, barbiturates, and HIV medications.

Bad side effects! But we're not pregnant! Dizziness, heart racing, headaches, tingling finger tips, pressure in sinus area and behind eyes...yeah, this stuff is REALLY good for you-NOT!!! I'm coming off it tonight!

Once i stared taking ortho tri cyclen lo i started getting severe mood swings, depression, acne, and melasma which is horrible looking. I suggest you try something else first.

Just like with any medication there are going to be side effects. I have been taking the pill to regulate cycle and it has worked fine. I am pleased with the pill and can't complain. With any medication you have to give it time to work and adjust with your own body.....
