Paroxetine review

Paroxetine is the generic form of Paxil, Paxil CR, and Pexeva. These medications are used in the treatment of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Paroxetine in known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, also called an SSRI.

Paroxetine may cause a worsening of symptoms that include aggression, irritability, anger, disassociated thoughts, mood swings or worsening of the mood, insomnia, trouble sleeping, agitation, and thoughts of self harm or suicide. If any of these symptoms or signs of a worsening of symptoms occur, the patient should be immediately removed from the medication.

Paroxetine can cause serious life threatening symptoms and lung problems in newborn babies. Pregnant women should never take paroxetine. Nursing women should never take this medication as it can cause serious effects in nursing babies. Paroxetine has been rated a pregnancy risk category D by the American Food and Drug Administration and women who may become pregnant should avoid this medication as well.

Paroxetine can not be taken within 14 days of stopping an MAOI, as life threatening interactions may occur. Any time there is a change in antidepressants, the prescribing physician should allow anywhere from 14 days to 5 weeks pass before starting a new medication.

Paroxetine may cause other health problems to become complicated and the prescribing physician should always insist on a thorough medical review before prescribing paroxetine. Patients with liver disease, kidney disease, seizures, epilepsy, or bipolar disorder may not be able to take paroxetine or may require careful monitoring while undergoing treatment with this medication.

If the patient accidentally misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered or the patient is able. Missed doses should never be made up by taking a double dose. Taking a missed dose too close to the time of the next scheduled dose may result in an overdose. An overdose requires immediate emergency medical attention and may present with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, tremors, sweating, and inability to urinate, a lack of urine output, blurry vision, rapid heart rate, confusion, aggression, seizures, coma, and death.

Patients should avoid alcohol while taking this medication as paroxetine can interact with alcohol and cause negative side effects. Medications which cause drowsiness such as muscle relaxants, cold medications, analgesics, anxiety medications, seizure medications, and other antidepressants should be avoided while taking paroxetine. Paroxetine can impair a patient’s ability to think or react and care should be taken when driving a car or operating machinery, especially when first starting this medication.

Dangerous side effects which require immediate emergency medical attention include convulsions, tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness, twitching, a loss of balance or coordination, agitation, confusion, sweating, or rapid heartbeat. Allergic reactions (swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat) require immediate emergency medical attention and may be life threatening.

Less serious side effects do not require emergency medical care but should still be reported to the prescribing physician so that adjustments in the dosage can be made. Symptoms such as nervousness, restlessness, an inability to sit still, weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, constipation, loss of appetite, changes in weight, sexual dysfunction, dry mouth, yawning, ringing in the ears, and impotence are rather common side effects.

Patients should always inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications such as atomoxetine, heart rhythm medications, blood thinners, additional antidepressants, and phenothiazines may cause serious interactions that may prove to be life threatening.
