  Pentoxifylline

Pentoxifylline

Pentoxifylline review by Medicalook.com

Pentoxifylline is a prescription medicine used by patients with blood flow disorders. It is marketed worldwide by French pharmaceutical company Aventis under the trade name Trental.

Pentoxifylline or Trental is used mainly to normalize blood flow. It provides relief to ache, cramps, and tiredness that are usually experienced with blood circulation problems. Pentoxifylline reduces the blood’s stickiness to obtain better circulation and delivery of oxygen to vital internal organs.

Pentoxifylline is available in 400mg extended-release tablets that are usually prescribed to be taken thrice a day. Although significant improvement of symptoms may be recognized after two to four weeks of Pentoxifylline use, it is not until you finish the prescription period that you will enjoy the drug’s full benefits. You must continue using Pentoxifylline even if you are starting to feel well. You can only stop or continue with your medication treatment beyond the prescribed period if your doctor tells you to.

Prior to Pentoxifylline use, your doctor must dismiss every factor that might interfere with the drug’s efficiency or increase its adverse effects. Pentoxifylline is contraindicated to patients with allergy to the drug and its components. It is also used with caution to patients who are hypersensitive to any kind of medication treatment. Pentoxifylline is also contraindicated to patients with kidney disease and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Pentoxifylline treatment may also cause drug interactions when used alongside other medicines, prescription or otherwise. It is important that you discuss your drug use before getting a Pentoxifylline prescription.

Pentoxifylline may cause several symptoms of side effects. Your doctor must discuss them with you so you would know what to do when they occur. The common side effects of Pentoxifylline are usually mild and occur for a short period of time. They go away as soon as your body becomes fully adjusted to the drug.

Mild episodes of constipation, upset stomach, gas, vomiting and headache are normally experienced at the onset of treatment. If they persist, worsen, or came with chest pain and irregular heartbeat, call your doctor’s attention right away.

Since Pentoxifylline may cause an upset stomach, doctors usually instruct their patients to take it with food. If that did not solve the problem and your symptoms become source of grave discomfort, talk to your doctor. An adjustment to your dosage may be needed.

You must also note that Pentoxifylline use may cause drowsiness and dizziness. It is advisable that you avoid doing activities that require alertness to ensure your safety. Also, keep your alcohol intake in check during Pentoxifylline treatment. Alcohol may worsen your symptoms of drowsiness and dizziness.

Medication treatment should not be dangerous in any way. If you only follow your doctor’s prescription carefully, you will be more likely to receive the drug’s full benefits minus the physical discomfort. It is also important that you are clinically examined periodically by a qualified physician during your treatment. Close monitoring will make it easier for your doctor to recognize a negative body response at its onset and provide immediate relief to cure the problem.
