One of the highest-selling medicines, Sumamed is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as some Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), bronchitis, and infections found in the ears, lungs, and throat. Sumamed, an antibiotic of the macrolide type, is taken orally and it works by inhibiting the growth of proteins that feed on bacteria, causing them to die out. This medicament does not work on viral infections, such as colds and flu. The popular brand names of this medicament are Zithromax and Ventrox.

Patients with abnormal heartbeats, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), kidney or liver disease, or cystic fibrosis should consult their healthcare professional before taking Sumamed. This medicament is not for patients taking anticoagulants (blood thinners), or any immunosuppresants. Combining these medicaments with Sumamed may be harmful to the patient's health.

Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant or are breastfeeding should be aware that tests have not shown that Sumamed is particularly harmful to a mother or her baby. However, consult with your healthcare professional before taking this medicament to ensure that there will be no adverse effects for the mother or child.

Sumamed is dispensed in two forms: as a tablet or as a liquid suspension, both are administered orally and typically taken once or twice a day for one to five days. If your healthcare professional instructs you otherwise, follow his prescription precisely or the bacteria in your body may become immune to the medicament. Take a missed a dosage as soon as you remember. However, do not take more than the prescribed amount at one time. Sumamed may be taken with or without food. Take the tablets with a full glass of water. Mix the liquid suspension well before taking it.

Do not consume alcohol while you are taking Sumamed. Do not participate in potentially dangerous tasks like driving until you are certain of Sumamed's effects on you since this medicament causes extreme sleepiness in some patients. Sumamed also makes the skin more sensitive to UV rays. The patient should avoid being in the sun for extended periods or using any tanning beds.

Unless your healthcare professional prescribes a specific diet, continue on the diet that you are on.

Most side effects of this medicament are minimal and include stomachaches, diarrhea, and mild skin rashes. Unless these symptoms show in very serious forms, there is no need for concern. On occasion, adverse side effects arise and a healthcare professional should be contacted immediately. In the event the patient experiences any of the following: hives, swelling, harsh rashes, hoarseness, irregular heart rhythm, or jaundice contact your healthcare professional immediately. If you experience any conditions not listed here that make you uncomfortable, contact your healthcare professional immediately.

This medicine should be stored in the container it came in. For the tablet, store it in a cool place away from any moisture. Store the liquid at room temperature or in a refrigerator, but do not freeze it. After 10 days, dispose of any unused medicament.
