Xenical, which is generically prescribed as orlistat, is commonly used to treat obesity in patients with high risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, or high cholesterol.
Xenical is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes gall bladder problems, chronic malasborption syndrome, kidney stone, pancreatitis, eating disorders, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, under-active thyroid, or the use of diet pills may not be able to take Xenical or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition. This medication should not be used in children under 12 years old. This medication may not be appropriate for children between the ages of 12 and 18, and the prescribing physician should be cautious when treating adolescence with Xenical.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated Xenical as a pregnancy risk category B. Xenical is not expected to cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies, although it has not yet been determined whether or not this medication will pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should thoroughly discuss whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks prior to prescribing this medication to a woman who is pregnant. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to women who are nursing.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Xenical, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with side effects such as facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require immediate emergency medical attention include symptoms such as fast heart rate, severe pain in the stomach that also spreads to the back, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms together may be a sign of pancreatitis.
Less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as oily stools, oily spotting in the undergarments, orange or brown oil in the stools, gas with a discharge, loose stools, urgent need to excrete the bowels, inability to control the bowels, increased number of bowel movements, problems with the teeth or gums, cold or flu symptoms, headaches, back pain, skin rash, itching, stomach pain, rectal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Xenical.
Xenical should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed by the physician. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of this medication. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose will present with symptoms such as inability to control the bowels, nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, or other possible symptoms.
There is a potential risk of negative drug interactions associated with Xenical. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications with a known negative drug interactions with Xenical include cyclosporine, digoxin, or blood thinners .
