BLOOD PRESSURE TEST DEFINITION

A blood pressure test is a simple test that gauges how much blood pressure your heart pumps in your arteries. It's so simple that you can take your own blood pressure tests at home. Many people suffering from hypertension can take this test to track their health.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST PURPOSE

This is a routine test that's usually done as a routine part of a doctor's appointment or in order to screen you for hypertension or high blood pressure. You should undergo this test once every two years to monitor your health or check if you have hypotension, hypertension, or pre-hypertension.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST RISKS

There are no risks associated with getting your blood pressure taken. Although uncomfortable, the squeezing of the ballooning blood pressure cuff is harmless, plus you discomfort will last for a couple of seconds at best.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST PREPARATION REQUIRED

You don't really need to prepare or anything when taking a blood pressure test, but if you're going to take one for good measure (and not just for the routine), you should avoid soda, coffee, or anything high in caffeine prior to taking the test. You should stay relaxed in order to avoid "white coat" hypertension that could mess with the results.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST PROCEDURE

You should be seated when the test is performed on you. The technician or nurse will wrap a cuff that's inflatable around your arm's top part. Once the cuff has inflated, it will stop the blood flow on your arm. As the cuff is deflated, the device will measure your blood pressure as it flows down to your arm that's been cut off of circulation.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST COMPLICATIONS

There are no complications associated with taking a blood pressure test. Since there are no incisions and it's not an invasive procedure, you won't suffer from any internal or external damage no matter how many times you do it.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST SIDE EFFECTS

There are no side effects to taking a blood pressure test. It's at most uncomfortable for a couple of seconds.

BLOOD PRESSURE TEST RESULTS

Systolic pressure is the pressure of the blood flow whenever your heart muscle contracts, while diastolic pressure is the pressure measured in between your heartbeats. Once the test is over, the nurse or technician will tell you immediately the results of your test. The blood pressure reading is given in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Below 120 is normal, below 90 is low blood pressure, and 120 or more is hypertension.
