MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING DEFINITION

Magnetic resonance Imaging or MRI is a type of scan that uses radio waves and powerful magnets to conjure pictures of the body’s insides. Unlike x-ray examination, this procedure does not use radiation that’s why it is considered safer, with no possible risks of radiation.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING PURPOSE

An MRI, when used with other imaging methods, will help doctors make a definite diagnosis. It provides clear images of the insides of the body so it is a lot easier to tell of any abnormalities.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING RISKS

Generally, an MRI scan is considered safe. However, there are some cases where allergic reaction to the contrast dye had been recorded, although they are very rare.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING PREPARATION REQUIRED

Since MRI uses strong magnets for the procedure, no kind of metal objects are allowed inside the room. You will also be asked about implants like heart pacemakers because they may not work as well or may shift during the procedure. You will also be asked if you are not comfortable to be enclosed in a close space or you have difficulty relaxing. In those cases, patients are given medicine to help them feel less anxious.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING PROCEDURE

During an MRI scan, you will be asked to wear a hospital gown and lie in a narrow table. This narrow table slides to a tunnel shaped-scanner. In some cases, a contrast material or a special dye is injected to give the radiologist a better view of certain areas. At the same time you are in the tunnel scanner, a qualified professional will watch the images from another room.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING COMPLICATIONS

An MRI rarely causes complications. It is not painful and would not require you some recovery time, unless you are given certain medications for the procedure.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING SIDE EFFECTS

To date, there is no recorded side effect for Magnetic resonance Imaging. However, the contrast material used can cause certain reactions, especially among patients with kidney disorders.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING RESULTS

You will be briefed regarding the findings on the scan. An MRI procedure produces images that can either be printed on film or stored on the computer. You will be advised by your doctor if and what kind of treatment may be needed based on the findings.
