RH Factor Blood Test

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST DEFINITION

An RH factor blood test is a type of blood test required for pregnant women as early as their first trimester. It is to confirm whether a pregnant woman is RH positive or negative. Rhesus or RH factor is a specific protein that can be found on the surface of the red blood cells. It is an inherited trait.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST PURPOSE

An RH factor blood test is important because it will help rule out RH incompatibility, which can be very risky for the unborn baby. During delivery, a woman’s body produces antibodies against the baby’s RH factor, if the mother and child have incompatible RH factors. This could be risky, especially for subsequent pregnancies as the existing antibodies would fight the baby’s red blood cells, leading to a life-threatening case of anemia.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST RISKS

There are no risks to having an RH factor blood test done. The risks come, depending on how the test will go.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST PREPARATION REQUIRED

There are no special preparations required for women who are having RH factor blood test.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST PROCEDURE

Like any blood test, a blood sample is needed for this procedure. A blood sample will be drawn from a vein in the arm and will be submitted to the laboratory for examination.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST COMPLICATIONS

The risk of complications that may arise in handling the procedure is very rare. However, complications may be found based on the result. RH positive is the common RH factor for most people. If you are found with an RH negative result, you will need special treatments to ensure that no risk will be created when a small amount of your baby’s blood comes in contact with your own.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST SIDE EFFECTS

You might experience a minor throbbing and bruising during the drawing of the blood sample.

RH FACTOR BLOOD TEST RESULTS

As mentioned earlier, certain precautions will be raised if a pregnant woman is found to have an RH negative factor. In any case, the baby’s father’s RH factor might also be confirmed to secure the most appropriate treatment. Most people are RH positive. If you are and your husband is, too, there is not much of a concern. If you are found to be RH negative, you will be prescribed with an RH immune globulin injection to help keep your body from producing RH antibodies.
